An audio coach tells you when to, say, turn up the incline on the treadmill (“push it”) or slow it down to lower your heart rate. But you don’t have to be an experienced runner. There are also workouts that will ease neophytes into the joys of achieving that endorphin rush. So will buying a fitness monitor or gadget actually improve your health? In one sense, it’s a self-selecting group in that anyone who buys such a device is already seriously motivated to improve their fitness level. And for those buyers, each of these devices will help. The trick is to develop healthy habits and stick with a fitness routine.

Overall, it seems like theyre on a mission to gather as much personal info as possible. There are some unique features about the GoodLife app, such as scheduling a workout and tracking/sharing your workout activity. You can also embed a playlist to keep you inspired. However, the app does fall short on many levels. I know the goal for GoodLife is to bring new members into the club and potentially hire a personal trainer, but missing is the personal connection to their 877,000 members. Currently the only way to gain workout advise it to visit their blog or scattered YouTube channel within the app.

(Gordon, btw, wrote this beautiful column about what he learned from Kraddicks life and death.) Thursday morning, the three who can be so entertaining that I laugh all day remembering certain segments talked quite seriously.

The women in White’s body sculpting class at the rec range from their 30’s to 50’s. During the class each student uses chairs, pilates bands and weights combined with low-energy movements to tone their muscles. “You’ll find most of the 20-somethings lining up for Zumba ,” White said. “This is more our speed.” As the class goes on, White demonstrates limber stretching and strength training as the members of the class follow her lead.

As for battery life, the Fuelband and Jawbone Up claim to last around 10 days between charges. We found these figures to be accurate in our testing. The Fitbit Flex claims to last 6-7 days on a single charge, which we also found to be accurate. I was usually able to charge the devices while sitting at my desk working, as each of them took only an hour or so to fill up again. The Fitbit Flex and Jawbone Up both come with extra dongles that interface with USB (a proprietary docking port for the Flex, and a 3.5 mm-to-USB converter for the Up).
